Description:	Robust shrubby perennial herb, up to 3 m, sometimes woody at the base. Leaves variable in shape and size, from almost hairless to densely hairy (depending on the subspecies). Flowers showy but short-lived, yellow. Sepals and petals 4; stamens 8, short. Capsule pale brown with 8 darker ribs. This subspecies is best recognized by the long spreading hairs on the upper parts of the plant.
Type location:	Brazil
Notes:	Subsp octovalvis is almost hairless or with short appressed hairs. Subsp. Subsp brevisepala has smaller, linear to narrowly lanceolate leaves and much smaller flowers.
Derivation of specific name:	octovalvis: with 8 valves, referring to the way the fruit splits into 8 irregular parts; sessiliflora: with sessile, stalkless, flowers.
Habitat:	In wet and swampy places along rivers lakes and marshes.
Altitude range: (metres)	Up to 1100 m
Flowering time:	All year round
Worldwide distribution:	Pantropical.
