Situated on the southwestern lower slopes of Mt Gorongosa, the spectacular Morumbodzi Falls (sometimes called the Morrombedze Falls), drop nearly 100m in various steps.
Only a small area of relatively intact evergreen riverine forest survives, right around the falls, in an otherwise quite disturbed area of inhabitation and slash-'n'-burn cultivation.
The plateau near the top of the falls was cleared of its original miombo woodland during colonial days (probably about 70-80 years ago) and used as grazing land for cattle. Although the cattle has long since disappeared, except for the occasional herd of goats, the area is still largely treeless due to frequent fires and relatively unused for cultivation. As a result these secondary grasslands have well matured and show a rich variety of, often pyrophytic grassland vegetation, including several orchids such as Eulophia cucullata, E. speciosa, E. mechowii and E. parviflora.
