Description of the genus

Dioecious or monoecious trees, with milky latex. Leaves alternate or opposite. Inflorescence a spike, unisexual or bisexual composed mostly of male flowers with a few female at the base. Male flowers: sessile; sepals 3; petals and disk 0; stamens 3. Female flowers: sepals 3; petals and disk 0;ovary 3-locular; styles 3, free, strongly coiled. Fruit 3-lobed, dehiscent, strongly inflated in E. bussei.

Worldwide: 40 species in the Old World tropics extending to the Pacific
