Description of the genus

Climbing shrub, with branches, leaves and inflorescences armed with prickles. Leaves alternate, 3-foliolate. Inflorescences of terminal and axillary panicles. Flowers small, unisexual, 5-merous. Fruit drupaceous, 3-7-seeded.

Comment: By most standards the only species in this genus was T. asiatica which has now been moved to Zanthoxylum but several other taxa that remain unresolved are still provisionally placed here. Until these names are resolved we will maintain this genus as accepted.

Worldwide: 1 species in the Old World tropics.

Mozambique: 2 taxa.
