Description of the genus

Trees, shrubs or lianes, often bearing tendrils in subopposite pairs (see image 2). Stipules pinnatifid or palmatifid. Leaves alternate, entire or toothed. Flowers solitary or paired or in few-flowered cymes borne in the leaf axils. Sepals 5, unequal. Petals 5, free, yellow, with a short claw. Stamens 10, all fertile, the filaments united at the base to form a cup. Ovary with 2-5 fertile loculi alternating with an equal number of sterile loculi; styles 2-5. Fruit a drupe. Seeds (1-)3-5.

Worldwide: 32 species in the Old World tropics.

Mozambique: 3 taxa.
