Description of the genus

Trees; leaf with a pair of leaflets; pod with glandular, leathery valves which split along one suture exposing the seed enclosed in a red aril.

Worldwide: 16-17 species in tropical Africa and America, 4 species in the Flora Zambesiaca region, 2 species in Zambia.

Mozambique: 3 taxa.
