Perennial herb (in ours). Stipules persistent, membranous, adnate to the leaf base and sometimes clasping the stem. Leaves linear, entire, succulent. Inflorescences axillary, long-pedunculate, simply umbellate. Perianth segments 5, the outer 2-3 ± succulent, the inner narrower and membranous. Stamens 5 (in ours). Nectariferous disk 0. Ovary superior, of 3 or 5 carpels; 3- or 5-locular, each loculus with numerous ovules; stigmas 3-5. Fruit a capsule. Seeds without an appendage. Worldwide: 9 species in South Africa, one extending to tropical Africa and Madagascar Mozambique: 2 taxa. |
