Description of the genus

Perennial herbs. Stipules present, scarious. Leaves alternate, opposite or whorled, linear to narrowly lanceolate, densely crowded at the base of the plant. Inflorescences of umbel-like terminal or axillary cymes. Flowers bisexual. Perianth segments 5, herbaceous, free. Stamens 5. Ovary of (3-)5 united carpels, 5-locular; ovule 1 per loculus. Fruit a (3-)5-lobed capsule.

Comment: There is some ambiguity about the spelling of this genus with both Psammatropha and Psammotropha in use by reputable sources. For this site we have adopted Psammotropha which is the spelling used in Flora Zambesiaca, the African Plants Database and The Plantlist.

Worldwide: 11 species in eastern South Africa, with two species extending into tropical Africa

Mozambique: 1 taxon.
