Description of the genus

Perennial herbs. Leaves alternate. Inflorescences consisting of axillary and terminal bracteate spikes, these densely white-woolly. Modified sterile flowers 0. Flowers bisexual or unisexual. Tepals 5 with membranous margins and a green centre, densely lanate on the back, deciduous with the seed. Stamens 5. Ovule 1. Stigmas 2. Capsule splitting irregularly.

Worldwide: 10 species in tropical and warm areas of the Old World
