Description of the genus

Monoecious or dioecious, epiphytic or lithophytic perennial herbs with fleshy stems. Stinging hairs 0. Stipules fused, intrapetiolar. Leaves opposite, each pair unequal in size; lamina toothed, ± fleshy. Inflorescences in leaf axils; male in small clusters; female capitate. Male flowers pedicellate, 5-merous. Female flowers sessile; perianth of 4-5 tepals; ovary symmetrical. Achene ovoid.

Worldwide: 16 species in the Old World tropics

Mozambique: 1 taxon.
