Description of the genus

Herbs with a corm. Stems with 1-2 tubular basal spathes. Leaves: lowest 1-3 with a free tubular sheathing base and a linear to filiform lamina; upper sessile, decurrent. Flowers 3-10 in a lax, scorpioid cyme; pedicels recurved. Perianth segments 6, free, caducous. Stamens 6. Ovary 3-locular. Style very short, 1. Seeds spherical, papillose.

Worldwide: 15 species widely distributed in Africa, Madagascar, Socotra, India, Australia and New Zealand
