Description of the genus

Herb with underground rhizomatous tuber. Leaves: petiole swollen below, stout, fleshy, with a pulvinus in the upper half; lamina 1-pinnate with fleshy leaflets, propagating vegetatively by forming tubers at the base of the leaflet. Inflorescences 1-2, appearing with the leaves. Spadix with female flowers below and male above, with a constricted zone of sterile flowers between, lacking a sterile appendix. Flowers unisexual with 4 fleshy tepals. Ovary 2-locular. Fruit a berry.

Worldwide: 1 species in eastern and southern tropical Africa

Mozambique: 1 taxon.
