Annual or perennial herbs.
Leaves flat and linear, never filiform except in F.
squarrosa, usually without hairs at the throat of the leaf
sheath. Inflorescence an anthela. Glumes spirally arranged;
the lowest two glumes may be empty, the succeeding ones bisexual,
the uppermost male or sterile. Perianth 0. Stamens 1-3;
stigmas 2 or 3, the base of the style falling with the rest
of the style. (In F. squarrosa, slender processes
descend from the style base over the nutlet). Nutlet biconvex if
stigmas 2, trigonous if stigmas 3. Nutlet smooth. tuberculate or
longitudinally striate, never transversely wrinkled as in
Bulbostylis. Mozambique: 4 taxa. |
