Description of the genus

Tufted perennial with horizontal woody rhizomes. Stems scapose. Leaf blade often ligulate. Involucral bracts leaf-like. Inflorescence a lateral or terminal head with up to 25 spikelets. Spikelets have many reddish-brown to black glumes. Nutlet blackish when mature.

Worldwide: 60 species in the tropics and subtropics.

Mozambique: 2 taxa.
