Caloncoba Gilg

Description of the genus

Unarmed trees or shrubs. Stipules caducous. Leaves hairless or hairy, sometimes glandular-punctate. Flowers often large, up to 10 cm in diameter, borne in axillary fascicles or solitary, in some species appearing on the old or second year wood, male or bisexual. Sepals 3, concave. Petals 8-12, larger than the sepals. Stamens many. Ovary 1-locular with 5-8 multiovulate placentas. Fruit a dehiscent capsule, splitting into 5-8 valves; spiny or unarmed.

Worldwide: 10 species in tropical Africa.

Mozambique: 1 taxon.
