Description of the genus

Annuals or perennials. Racemes mostly in pairs, terminal or arranged in a spatheate false panicle. Sessile spikelet: callus acute to pungent, long; lower glume with a narrow median groove; lower floret reduced to a hyaline lemma; upper floret bisexual; upper lemma 2-lobed with a terminal bigeniculate awn. Pedicellate spikelet male or sterile, much longer than the sessile spikelet.

Worldwide: 5 species in tropical and South Africa

Mozambique: 2 taxa.
