Marine herbs with robust, woody, sympodial rhizomes. Stems erect, ± unbranched, bearing 6-8 leaves, arising at intervals of 4 internodes. Leaves: sheath clasping stem; lamina shed together with the sheath, linear, parallel-veined; margin ± serrate; apex rounded, sometimes emarginate. Flowers solitary, terminal, enclosed by 3-4 leafy bracts. Fruit of 1 ovary and a fleshy bract. Germination usually viviparous. Worldwide: 2 species: T. ciliatum widespread in tropical west Indian Ocean; T. pachyrhizum in temperate W Australia Mozambique: 2 taxa. |
