Description of the genus

Shrubs or small trees, pubescent when young. Leaves often fascicled at end of branches, shortly petiolate; lamina lanceolate, base gradually narrowed, margins entire, somewhat fleshy. Inflorescence cymes, 2-4-flowered, axillary; bracts lanceolate, pubescent; sepals ovate-lanceolate, pubescent; petals yellow, imbricate, shortly clawed; deciduous. Fruit drupes, pubescent, sub-globose.

Derivation of name: in honour of Joseph Donat Surian, (d. 1691) a French physician and explorer.

Worldwide: 1 species, pantropical.

Mozambique: 1 taxon.
