Shrubs or trees, often multi-stemmed. Leaves alternate, sometimes clustered near stem apices, simple; margin entire. Inflorescence a terminal panicle or corymb. Flowers bisexual, actinomorphic. Calyx campanulate, shortly lobed or dentate, the lobes valvate. Corolla white; tube usually campanulate, urceolate with 5 spreading or reflexed lobes.. Stamens 5, inserted on the corolla tube. Style 1,terminal, well-developed, entire or very shortly 2-fid; stigmas 2, clavate to capitate. Fruit subspherical, fleshy; pyrenes 4, 2-locular; outer surface winged or ridged. Worldwide: 18 species occurring from east Africa, Madagascar, the Comores and the Mascarenes. Mozambique: 2 taxa. |
