Shrubs, trees or vines; stems sometimes armed. Leaves opposite or alternate, petiolate, lamina margins entire. Inflorescence many flowered cymes or panicles, axillary (or terminal); bracts absent or inconspicuous, caduceus; bracteoles 2-4. Male flowers with perianth campanulate or funnelform; female flowers with perianth ovate-tubular or cylindric. Fruit oblong, ribbed with sticky glands. Seeds oblong with deep longitudinal furrow. Worldwide: c. 35 species in tropical and sub-tropical region with the highest diversity in South East Asia and tropical America. Mozambique: 1 taxon. |
