Description of the genus

Trees or shrubs, glabrescent, buds finely tomentose with latex; branchlets quadrangular. Leaves opposite, petiolate (rarely sessile); lamina margins entire, leathery, usually glabrous, translucent glandular canals present between veins. Inflorescence cymose or thysiform; terminal, pseudo-terminal or axillary, bracts caducous. Sepals and petals together 4-12, 2- or 3-whorled, not always differentiated. Fruit drupe-like berries with thin exocarp, thin fleshy mesocarp and thin endocarp, sometimes adherent to seed. Seed 1 large.

Worldwide: 190 species in tropical regions mainly Asia, East Africa, Madagascar, Mascarenes and Australasia.

Mozambique: 1 taxon.
