Evergreen trees; leaves paripinnate, leaflets with distinct petiolules, in 3−5 pairs, subequal in size; flower borne on large terminal panicles; flower buds enclosed in a pair of bracteoles; petals 5, the dorsal much the largest, white; pod large, woody, compressed, explosively dehiscent. The leaves are not easily distinguished from those of Isoberlinia.
Comment: There is a record of Berlinia auriculata in A preliminary checklist of the vascular plants of Mozambique (Da Silva, M.C., Izidine, S. & Amude, A.B. (2004)), but that appears to be a West African species and so we have not included it here. Worldwide: 15 species in tropical Africa, 2 species in the Flora Zambesiaca region, 1 species in Zambia. Mozambique: 1 taxon. |
