Description of the genus

Perennial (ours). Inflorescence a panicle. Spikelets all alike, dorsally flattened, with 2 fertile flowers. Glumes persistent, subequal, obtuse, 1/3 to 2/3 length of spikelet. Lower lemma firmly cartilaginous; upper lemma remaining membranous at maturity, thinner than the lower.

Worldwide: 10 species in the Old World tropics

Mozambique: 1 taxon.
