Description of the genus

Annuals or perennials. Inflorescence of paired or digitate racemes with narrowly winged triquetrous rhachis; spikelets paired. Spikelets awned; lower glume minute or 0; upper glume very short to as long as the spikelet and sometimes awned; lower lemma scabrid, prominently nerved, entire to 3-dentate, terminating in a straight awn; upper lemma cartilaginous; apex acute to acuminate; margin flat and thin, enfolding and concealing the palea.

Worldwide: 5 species in tropical and South Africa

Mozambique: 1 taxon.
