Rhizomatous creepers, climbing shrubs or lianas with white latex. Spines, tendrils and stipules absent. Leaves petiolate; petiole with glands on the adaxial side; lamina with the midrib impressed above and prominent beneath; secondary veins curved towards the margin, anastomosing; tufts of hairs (domatia) usually present in the axils of some secondary veins. Inflorescences axillary and sometimes at the same time terminal. Calyx lobes imbricate, almost free, at the base; corolla tube obconical, with a short urceolate base; inside with tufts of hairs alternating with the stamens; corolla lobes contorted in bud and overlapping to the right, spreading to reflexed. Ovary semi-inferior; carpels two, multi-ovulate, surrounded by a disk. Fruit composed of 2 pendulous, follicular, narrowly cylindric mericarps, these sometimes united at the apices. Seeds narrowly ellipsoid, more or less laterally compressed, not rostrate, with an apical coma; endosperm in a thin layer completely surrounding the embryo. Worldwide: Species 14, in Africa. Mozambique: 1 taxon. |
