Description of the genus

Perennial, rhizomatous herbs, rarely shrublets. Basal leaves alternate, petiolate, simple, palmate or ternately compound; cauline leaves, if present, 1-5, in whorls of 2-4 partly fused leaves. Inflorescence a solitary terminal flower or flowers borne in two or three times compound umbelliform cymes, these surrounded by involucres of simple or compound leaves. Flowers bisexual, actinomorphic. Sepals numerous, petaloid. Petals 0. Stamens numerous. Carpels numerous, each with one pendulous ovule. Fruit a cluster of achenes or sometimes drupes.

Derivation of name: A name used by Theophrastus; possibly a corruption of Naaman, a Semitic name for Adonis, from whose blood sprung the crimson-flowered Anemone coronaria

Worldwide: About 200 species, cosmopolitan, but mainly in the Northern Hemisphere.

Mozambique: 1 taxon.
