Description of the genus

Annuals or perennials. Inflorescence composed of 1 or more deciduous racemes arranged along an axis. Spikelets with several flowers, laterally flattened. Glumes 1-nerved, membranous, unequal. Lemmas 3-nerved, keeled, acuminate to shortly awned.

Derivation of name: from the Greek: pogon meaning beard, arthron, a joint; probably referring to the beaded joints of the rhachilla in the spikelet.

Worldwide: 4 species in tropical and South Africa.

Mozambique: 2 taxa.
