Description of the genus

Perennial (ours). Inflorescence a single terminal raceme, bearing spikelets, arranged alternately, embedded in the rhachis. Rhachis spongy, fracturing into segments of 1-4(-8) spikelets. Spikelets sessile, dorsally flattened, 1-flowered. Glumes unequal; lower abaxial, hyaline and minute; upper adaxial, appressed to the rhachis, concealing the floret, (1-)3-nerved. Lemma hyaline, 3-nerved, emarginate to 2-toothed at apex, mucronate or rarely awned.

Worldwide: 6 species in the Old World tropics

Mozambique: 1 taxon.
