Description of the genus

Annual or perennial herbs. Leaves alternate, 1-2-pinnatisect (in ours). Capitulum solitary on each peduncle, heterogamous, discoid; marginal florets female, ithout corolla, disk florets bisexual (sometimes sterile) with 4-lobed corolla. Capitula discoid; phyllaries subequal. Receptacle nude. Pappus 0.

Worldwide: 55 species, southern hemisphere (South Africa) to North Africa and Mexico.
