Rosulate stemless herbs, small shrubs or suffrutices. Leaves alternate or subopposite above, usually gland-pitted. Capitula terminal and solitary or aggregated, or in the leaf axils or forks of the branches, heterogamous; ray florets female with yellow ligules, or 0; disk florets bisexual, yellow, ± tubular. Phyllaries in 3-7 series. Receptacular scales present, deeply fimbriate (in ours). Achenes subturbinate, hairy. Pappus composed of 10-20 hyaline scales in 2 series. Derivation of name: after Philipp Lorenz Geiger, a German professor of pharmacy at Heidelberg University. Worldwide: 28 species in tropical and South Africa Mozambique: 5 taxa. |
