Description of the genus

Perennial herbs, subshrubs or shrubs. Stems winged. Leaves alternate, sometimes slightly decurrent. Inflorescence (in ours) with capitula in a much-branched, terminal, leafless, corymbose cyme. Capitula disciform, heterogamous with outer florets female borne in 1-3 rows and inner florets bisexual. Receptacle naked. Phyllaries in 3-8 rows, ovate and narrowing upwards. Achenes cylindric. Pappus 1-seriate, of scaberulous bristles.

Worldwide: c. 40 species in warm areas

Mozambique: 1 taxon.
