Description of the genus

Dioecious perennial herbs, prostrate or climbing. Leaves simple, palmately lobed. Tendrils 2-fid. Receptacle tube elongate in both male and female flowers. Flowers white or yellow. Male flowers in axillary racemes; often with a long-pedicellate solitary flower; stamens 3; all 2-thecous or one 1-thecous and two 2-thecous. Female flowers solitary; stigma 3-lobed. Fruit ovoid, smooth, indehiscent, red.

Worldwide: 20 species in tropical and southern Africa, Madagascar, Aldabra and the Setchelles

Mozambique: 3 taxa.
