Description of the genus

Climbing dioecious perennial herbs with tuberous rootstock. Tendrils simple. Flowers yellow or white. Male flowers solitary or in few-flowered fascicles; petals 5, free; stamens 5. Female flowers solitary; staminodes 3 or 5; ovary rostrate; stigma 3-lobed. Fruit ellipsoid, rostrate, orange-red, indehiscent.

Worldwide: 10 species from tropical Africa to Socotra

Mozambique: 3 taxa.
