Description of the genus

Perennials (ours). Inflorescence usually a contracted panicle, but sometimes reduced to a raceme (as in our R. disticha). Spikelets 3-10-flowered; glumes subequal, as long as the spikelet or nearly so; floret callus obtuse. Lemmas 5-9-nerved, bearing tufts of hairs arranged in two transverse series, these sometimes reduced to two marginal tufts, 2-lobed at apex, the lobes usually awned and with an awn arising from the sinus.

Worldwide: c. 90 species mainly in Australia, New Zealand and southern Africa.

Mozambique: 1 taxon.
