Description of the genus

Climbing monoecious herbs. Leaves simple. Tendrils simple. Stipule-like probracts subcircular, fimbriate-ciliate. Male flowers in short pedunculate racemes; receptacle-tube with small lobes; corolla lobes 5, united at the base, small (1-1.5 mm long), yellowish; stamens 3; anthers free, exserted; thecae short, arcuate. Female flowers solitary; ovary subspherical, smooth; perianth similar to male flower; stigma usually 2-lobed. Fruit a red, subspherical berry. Seeds 2, whitish, ovate in outline.

Worldwide: 2 species in tropical Africa and India

Mozambique: 1 taxon.
