Description of the genus

Shrubs or subshrubs. Inflorescence a terminal spike. Bracts large, obscuring the calyx; bracteoles linear. Calyx actinomorphic; lobes 5, somewhat unequal; tube shorter than lobes. Corolla not resupinate, 2-lipped; upper lip entire or 2-fid; lower lip deeply 3-lobed; lobes much shorter than the tube. Fertile stamens 2, exserted; anthers 2-thecous. Ovary with 1(-2) ovules per loculus. Seeds borne on reinacula; seeds with hygroscopic glochidiate hairs.

Worldwide: 22 species in eastern and southern Africa, Madagascar, Comoros,Arabian peninsula, India and Malaysia

Mozambique: 4 taxa.
