Small annual herbs, lacking a basal rosette; roots whitish. Stems 4-angled, sometimes winged. Leaves opposite and decussate, usually sessile, the venation usually palmate. Flowers solitary and axillary below, borne in lax, few-flowered terminal racemes above. Bracts in unequal pairs. Calyx 5-lobed, ribbed or winged. Corolla 2-lipped; tube cylindric; upper lip 2-lobed, hooded; lower lip larger, 3-lobed, with hairs having a multicellular base and club-shaped end cell. Stamens 4, fertile. Nectary absent. Ovary 2-locular; ovules many. Fruit an oblong, glabrous, septicidal capsule. Seeds small, numerous, epidermis thin-walled. Worldwide: c. 24 species in tropical and southern Africa. Mozambique: 8 taxa. |
