Description of the genus

Shrub or, rarely, a small tree. Leaves opposite or whorled, sessile or almost so; margin with a few teeth in upper half. Inflorescence of terminal and axillary cymes. Calyx 5-partite. Corolla 5-lobed; tube c. 10 mm, cylindric or funnel-shaped; lobes flat. Stamens 4, didynamous. Ovary 2-locular. Fruit a capsule. Seeds discoid with margin winged.

Derivation of name: for Lorenzo de Freilino (1754-1820), Italian naturalist and botanist.

Worldwide: 5 species occurring in tropical and South African montane habitats.

Mozambique: 1 taxon.
