Description of the genus

Perennials (ours). Inflorescence an open or contracted panicle with slender branches. Spikelets 1-flowered, bisexual; glumes 0 or rudimentary; sterile lemmas 0; fertile lemma boat-shaped, strongly keeled, 5-nerved, awnless or tapering to a short awn-like structure. Stamens 6.

Derivation of name: after Johann Daniel Leers, 1727-1774, German botanist

Worldwide: 17 species in tropical and warm temperate regions

Mozambique: 1 taxon.
