Perennial herbs with annual stems growing from a vertical tuberous rootstock. Stems 1-several, branched or unbranched, erect or ascending, hairless or minutely pubescent. Milky latex present. Leaves opposite. Inflorescence terminal and/or extra-axillary, pedunculate, erect umbels. Corolla deeply 5-lobed, rotate or strongly reflexed. Corona lobes arising from the base of the staminal column erect and somewhat fleshy; the margin usually with a pair of teeth arching over the staminal column. Anthers wings curved, with or without a twisted basal tail. Follicles single, erect, ovoid to fusiform. Pedicel not twisted. Worldwide: 13 species in Eastern Tropical Africa, from Ethiopia to Mozambique and Zimbabwe. Mozambique: 4 taxa. |
