Description of the genus
Submerged or floating-leaved bisexual (in ours), dioecious or monoecious herbs. Leaves radical. Flowers from a persistent leathery spathe. Sepals 3; petals 3. Fruit a fleshy capsule. Worldwide: 21 species in tropical and warm regions, mainly in the Old World. Mozambique: 3 taxa. |
