Description of the genus

Submerged perennial dioecious herbs. Leaves linear, radical, sessile, lacking a midrib; tip obtuse; margin entire or minutely serrate. Flowers unisexual, floating. Male flowers free-floating on surface; female flowers floating, attached to plant by long peduncle. Sepals 3. Petals 1 (male) or 3 (female), minute. Fruit a narrow cylindric capsule.

Worldwide: 2-10 species, tropical and warm temperate

Mozambique: 1 taxon.
