Description of the genus

Annual or perennial herbs. Leaves cauline and in a basal rosette (often not persisting). Flowers 5-merous in a lax few-many flowered cyme. Calyx 5-lobed, without basal glands; lobes sometimes winged. Corolla tube 5-lobed. Ovary 1-locular. Stigma ± capitate or 2-lobed. Capsule septicidally 2-valved.

Worldwide: c. 15 species in subsaharan Africa and Madagascar
