Description of the genus

Perennial herbs or small shrubs. Inflorescence an elongated terminal spike. Calyx tubular, 5-ribbed. Stamens free. Ovary 1-locular. Fruit dehiscing in a ring near the base, often splitting into 5 valves from below.

Derivation of name: Plumbago: Latin for lead, of doubtful application

Worldwide: 24 species in tropical and warm regions

Mozambique: 3 taxa.
