Description: | Medium to large tree. Leaves alternate, simple, glabrous, oblong-lanceolate with a prominent midrib. Inflorescence a large (up to 30 cm long) pyramidal panicle with male and female flowers in the same panicle; axis reddish, shortly hairy. Sepals 5, green with whitish margin. Petals 5, 3-5 mm long, whitish with the 3-7 nerves yellow or reddish. Stamens 1(-2), fertile; staminodes 3(-4), very short. Disk c. 2 mm tall, thick. Fruit a large fleshy drupe, variable in shape and size, yellow to red when ripe. | |
Notes: | Very commonly cultivated in the tropics for its edible fruits and rarely found in the wild as an escape. | |
