Climbers. Leaves alternate, petiolate, entire with cordate to hastate base. Inflorescence of racemes which terminate in a tendril. Perianth of 5 brightly coloured segments; outer 2 or 3 cordate or ovate, inner oblong. Stamens 8. Styles 3. Fruit a 3-angled achene, loosely surrounded by the enlarged papery perianth. Worldwide: 2-3 species in Central America Mozambique: 1 cultivated taxon. |
