Perennial herb, aromatic, stems square in section. Leaves opposite, simple, with entire margins. Inflorescence a mass of dense cymes forming a corymbose panicle with large purple bracteoles. Calyx of 5 sub-equal teeth. Corolla reddish purple, rarely white, with 3-lobed lower lips and shallowly 2-lobed flat upper lip. Fruit a cluster of four 1-seeded nutlets. Worldwide: Over 50 species native to the Mediterranean, and temperate Asia. Mozambique: 1 cultivated taxon. |
