Description of the genus

Shrubs or small trees with milky latex. Closely related to Euphorbia and differing in the involucral glands being completely enclosed by the cyathium.

Derivation of name: Greek: slipper-flower

Worldwide: 16 species in Central America, northern South America and the West Indies.

Mozambique: 1 cultivated taxon.
