Description of the genus

Shrub with twining stems (in ours). Leaves simple. Flowers zygomorphic, in axillary pedunculate pairs. Corolla 2-lipped. Fruit a berry.

Derivation of name: after Adam Lonicer or Lonitzer, 1528-1586, German physician and naturalist.

Worldwide: 180 species, northern hemisphere to Mexico and the Philippines

Mozambique: 2 cultivated taxa.
