Description of the genus

Undershrubs. Inflorescence a terminal thyrse; bracts small, not obscuring the calyx. Calyx actinomorphic; lobes 5. Corolla 2-lipped; lobes 5, subequal; tube linear, longer than the lobes; small cleistogamous flowers usually present. Fertile stamens 2; anthers 2-thecous; staminodes 2. Ovary with 2 ovules per loculus. Seeds borne on retinacula.

Worldwide: 60 species in the tropics

Mozambique: 1 cultivated taxon.
